For this math year we used Connected Math 2 for our text book. This program is very difficult. The program is made out of eight units. So far we have completed six of the units out of the eight. The units we have covered so far are Prime Time, Bits and Pieces 1, Bits and Pieces 2, Covering and Surrounding, Shapes and Designs, and we are working on How Likely Is It. There are about four or five different investigations in each book. In each book we do ACE which stands for Applications, Connections, and Extensions.
Each section we worked on, including the work we did in school and homework, are recorded in our notebooks. There are four different sections in our notebooks. The first section is “Class work” where we put the work we do in class. The second section is “Homework” where we put our homework in. The third section is “Reference” where we put papers that we can refer to if we need help. The last part is “Assessments” where we put all of our graded assignments (quizzes, reflections, and tests.) We also have a notebook where we put our vocabulary in. Last of all we have a “Notebook Checklist” where we list our homework we have for that night. All these four sections help us organize our work. This also helps us if we have an open quiz or test. We also have lab sheets. Lab sheets are papers that help us with a certain point in the chapter or they help us with certain parts of our homework. When we finish the unit and take the unit test we take out all of the papers from class work, homework, and assessment.
One most important thing at the beginning of each unit is the “Focus Questions”. Focus questions do many things. One thing they do is reflect on our goals for the unit. The second thing they do is they make us curious about the unit. They also include sample questions we are able to think about. Later on in the unit we see those questions in investigations and reflections.
Another important thing that is at the beginning is Mathematical Highlights. This previews important ideas of the unit. Also they help us to follow where we are in the unit and how much is left. They also provide us with a base of what we will be learning about in the following unit. The Highlights is also a place where we can refer to if we want to know what the unit is about, and to find the main ideas of the unit. Highlights are also for parents to see what we are doing in the unit.polygons.gif
My favorite unit was Shapes and Designs. This was my favorite unit because we got to learn about many different polygons. Some polygons are: triangles, rectangles, squares, parallelograms, pentagons, hexagons, heptagons, nonagons, regular, and irregular. I also liked it because we learned that some polygons are in the real world. One example is a stop sign…or an octagon. Another reason is we got to learn about angles and how they relate to different shapes. I also learned how to use an angle ruler (thanks to Mrs. Mannon). I learned many things. For example; all of the angles in a triangle equal 180° and that triangles are the best shape to build structures with. I connected these concepts in this unit to my life by looking at signs and buildings to see what shapes they are. Also I found different angles in my daily life. One angle that is common is the 90° angle. You can find this angle on any rectangle or square, such as a window, computer, book, and paper. Next year when I am in math class I will remember what Mrs. Mannon said, “You can do hard things.” This math year was the best math year, with the best teachers….Mrs. Wester and Mrs. Mannon.
